Background and Relocation
Can you share a bit about yourself and your journey as a software engineer?
Nasser: Certainly! I'm Nasser, originally from Afghanistan, now residing in Ireland since December 2023. I completed my Computer Science degree at Kateb University in 2019. My passion for technology started during an internship in my second semester, leading me to explore remote freelancing on platforms like Upwork starting in 2018. The challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic unexpectedly propelled my freelancing career forward, providing opportunities to collaborate with diverse international teams and gain valuable experience in web development.
How did you first connect with Imagine?
Nasser: A conversation with a friend about working abroad and navigating visa processes got me interested in Imagine's resources and support network, inspiring me to pursue new career possibilities overseas.
What challenges did you face before joining Imagine?
Nasser: Before joining Imagine, I struggled with feelings of disappointment and confusion. I lacked clarity on the process and doubted its possibilities. I was unsure of where to begin or how to proceed. While the idea of pursuing opportunities abroad stayed on my mind, the absence of a concrete plan held back my progress. When faced with uncertainty and a lack of guidance, it's easy to lose motivation. However, the support of Imagine's coaches and peers helped me to change my mindset and encouraged me to persist, making the most of every available opportunity to achieve my aspirations.
While the idea of pursuing opportunities abroad stayed on my mind, the absence of a concrete plan held back my progress.
Why did you choose to join Imagine?
Nasser: I chose to join Imagine to leverage the experience and resources of individuals who had navigated similar paths. The guidance from Imagine's coaches and peers proved invaluable in refining my job search strategies and enhancing my interview performance. Engaging in multiple coaching sessions before and after interviews significantly transformed my mindset, increasing my confidence and readiness. This improvement ultimately increased my prospects of advancing in the hiring process for international opportunities.

Overcoming Obstacles: Challenging Stereotypes and Rejections
What were the biggest challenges during the process?
Nasser: One of the most significant challenges I faced was overcoming prejudices and stereotypes associated with professionals from Afghanistan. Securing interviews and gaining the trust of some potential employers was a challenging task. Additionally, navigating the complex visa application process and encountering skepticism from some immigration officials during travel presented considerable obstacles that required resilience and perseverance to overcome.
How did you manage numerous rejections?
Nasser: Dealing with a high number of rejections, totaling around 500, and experiencing multiple interview failures was undoubtedly discouraging. However, I decided to view each rejection as an opportunity for growth and learning. I continuously refined my approach, asked for feedback, and focused on improving my skills and presentation to prospective employers.
Unconventional Path to Securing a Dream Job
How did you ultimately secure your dream job in Europe?
Nasser: Securing my dream job in Europe was an unconventional journey. After receiving an invitation through Upwork, I transitioned from freelancing to a full-time role with my current employer following a successful trial period. I then took the initiative to propose visa sponsorship, which was quickly approved, facilitating my relocation to Ireland to pursue this exciting opportunity.
Navigating Relocation with Support from Imagine and Partners
Can you share your journey from receiving the job offer to relocating?
Nasser: Following the job offer, my employer supported me in navigating the visa application process and preparing the necessary documentation for a work permit. Although we encountered challenges during travel due to misconceptions about visas, we ultimately found a safe route to Dublin. Adjusting to a new culture and finding suitable accommodation were additional obstacles, but the constant support of my teammates and employer made the transition smoother and more manageable.
How has this experience impacted your and your family's life?
Nasser: Imagine has had a profound impact on my life and my family's well-being. Their support and guidance gave confidence in us during challenging times. Collaborating with Imagine coaches and their partners, such as Localyze, helped me navigate bureaucratic processes and maintain resilience and a positive mindset throughout our journey.
What have you learned from your experience?
Nasser: 've learned the importance of resilience, perseverance, never giving up and seeking out supportive networks when pursuing ambitious career goals. The personalized guidance and encouragement provided by Imagine's coaches underscored the significance of genuine support in achieving professional success and personal fulfillment.

Any tips for those currently in a similar process?
Nasser: For fellows navigating similar career transitions, I recommend seeking out employers and organizations that prioritize diversity, inclusion, and global talent acquisition. Embrace opportunities to network and learn from others' experiences, and don't be discouraged by setbacks. Stay persistent, continuously improve your skills, and keep open to unexpected pathways that may lead to fulfilling career opportunities abroad.

Despite facing doubts based on nationality, talent transcends boundaries, and everyone deserves a chance to succeed regardless of background. Together, let's inspire, believe in ourselves, and break barriers to success.
